At the cellular level, hyperbaric oxygen engages regenerative pathways through the "hyperoxic-hypoxic paradox" — intermittent oxygen surges that mimic some signals of low oxygen. Studied effects include telomerase activation, clearance of senescent cells, stem-cell mobilisation and strengthened antioxidant defence, forming the mechanistic basis for HBOT's longevity research.

Detailed mechanism

Repeated HBOT sessions activate telomerase (increasing telomere length by >20%), selectively eliminate senescent cells, mobilize bone marrow stem cells via NOS activation, and upregulate endogenous antioxidants (SOD, catalase, glutathione peroxidase) through hormetic stress responses.
