Mechanism

Neovascularization & Angiogenesis

Angiogenesis is the growth of new blood vessels. Under hyperbaric oxygen, raised tissue-oxygen levels stimulate release of growth factors including VEGF, PDGF and FGF, prompting capillaries to extend into poorly perfused tissue. This rebuilt blood supply underlies HBOT's role in healing chronic wounds, irradiated tissue and compromised grafts.

Detailed mechanism

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), and fibroblast growth factor (FGF) are upregulated under hyperoxic conditions. This cascade promotes new blood vessel formation, critical for wound healing and tissue regeneration.
